Tradition of “Palamattam”
“Palamattam “ proudly traces their lineage back to the Pakalomattam Family, the most renowned Christian family in Kerala. The Pakalomattam family’s lineage intertwines with the very foundations of Christianity in India. According to tradition, the Pakalomattam family’s origins can be traced back to the arrival of St. Thomas the Apostle in Kerala in the first century AD.
The Pakalomattam Family is the most prominent among the first four Brahmin families Pakalomattam, Kalli, Kalliankel and Sankarpuri, who accepted Baptism from the St. Thomas “The Apostle” himself.Of this “The Pakalomattam” and “Sankarpuri” were given the sole right on Priesthood. The Pakalomattam Brahmins were the traditional Vedic instructionist teachers. In the 21rst century “The Pakalomattam family” stands as a timeless testament to the enduring spirit of faith and heritage.
In the early days the family was centred in and around North Paravur. Later they migrated to Kuruvalangad in Kottayam, where they established themselves as a great family. A branch of the Pakalomattam family shifted to Angamaly, sometime later and grew around the area. Currently there are about 200 families residing in and around the Palamattom House at Angamaly, who belong to on of the various groups that spread out from the Pakalomattam lineage.
Over the centuries, the Pakalomattam family played a significant role in the development and growth of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Kerala. With each passing generation, they have nurtured a legacy that echoes with the resonance of faith, resilience, and unwavering devotion.
Today, the Pakalomattam family is spread across different parts of Kerala and beyond, and its members have excelled in various fields, including academics, medicine, law, and business. They continue to uphold their Christian values and contribute to the welfare of society, carrying forward their ancestral legacy.
